Untalkative photographs is a long-term photo project by Kazuhiro Chiba, focusing on the aftermath of the 2011 Tōhoku Earthquake and the evolving landscape of memory. Unlike exhibitions or printed photobooks, this ongoing blog-based project seeks to preserve and share memory through photography in ways only the web can allow.

Since the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, Chiba has focused his photographic practice on landscapes and memories shaped by the disaster. Through long-term documentation of the affected regions, he continues to capture silent traces and changing scenery.

His ongoing series, Untalkative Photographs, presents quiet yet powerful records of post-disaster Japan. Published bilingually on his blog, the project reaches an international audience and aims to preserve memory through photography.

From my own perspective as the photographer, one of the works that deeply inspired me is a website called Miyagi 1951.

One of the photographic works that deeply inspired me is a website called Miyagi 1951. It features scenes of daily life in postwar Miyagi, captured by Dr. George Butler, who served as a U.S. military physician during the occupation. Among these images, especially those taken around present-day Higashimatsushima- formerly a military base - I felt the light was the same as in the landscape I photograph today. That familiar quality of light bridged time and memory, evoking a strange sense of déjà vu. In Dr. Butler's photographs, I seemed to find fragments of my own memory, resonating quietly with the images I continue to capture.

2011年の東日本大震災以降、被災地における記憶と風景を記録する活動に注力。変化する静かな風景の中に残された記憶の痕跡を追い続けています。

シリーズ作品『Untalkative photographs』は、震災後日本の静かで力強い記録として、英語と日本語の2言語でブログに掲載し、国内外の読者に向けて発信しています。

私がインスピレーションを受けた写真のひとつに、「Miyagi 1951」というウェブサイトがあります。進駐軍の軍医として戦後の宮城に赴任していたジョージ・バトラー医師が撮影した写真、とくに「松島キャンプ」があった現在の東松島市周辺の風景には、私がいま撮影している光と重なるものがありました。その光は、過去と現在の時間をつなぐように私の記憶に触れ、バトラー氏の写真をどこか懐かしく、そして私自身の写真と響き合う存在として感じさせたのです。
