People Time 1992–2002
I decided to bring back my 2003 photo book People Time and make it available again, though only in limited stock.
Not because it is a past work to be cleared away, but because I feel there is a reason to revisit it now.
The phrase People Time is not one that carries a clear meaning in English.
When I asked a native English teacher back then, I was told it cannot be directly translated—it depends on the context and on the interpretation of the person who uses it.
If I were to suggest one possible meaning, it might be “the time shared between people.”
In the 1990s, on the streets of Tokyo, people walked, talked, passed by one another, paused for a moment.
In those fragments, captured on monochrome film, there was undeniably People Time.
Even in 2011, in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, that fragile thread between people still felt alive.
But in the decade since, that thread seems to have thinned rapidly.
We now meet through screens, speak through devices; somewhere in the exchange, something deeply human slips away.
This book does not solve that loss.
It quietly remembers a time before the acceleration—and asks us to reflect on what People Time once meant, and what it could still mean today.

ピープル・タイム 1992–2002
2003年に出版した写真集『People Time』を、このたび改めて販売することにしました。
在庫は限られていますが、今こそこの本をもう一度開いてもらいたいと思ったからです。
「People Time」という言葉は、英語でも明確に定義できるものではありません。
当時、英語を母語とする講師に尋ねたときも、直訳できる言葉ではなく、あくまで文脈や、使う人の解釈によって意味が変わると教えられました。
私自身の解釈をあえて保留しつつ、ひとつの意味合いを示すとすれば――
それは「人と人との時間（あるいは糸）」です。
1990年代の東京で、人びとが街を歩き、語り合い、すれ違い、立ち止まる。
モノクロフィルムに焼き付けられたその瞬間には、確かに「人と人との時間」が存在していました。
そして2011年の東日本大震災のときには、その「人と人の間の糸」は、まだかろうじて生きていたように思います。
しかしこの十数年で、その糸は急速に細くなってしまったのではないでしょうか。
いま私たちはスクリーン越しに会い、端末を通じて語り合う――そのやり取りのどこかで、人間らしさがこぼれ落ちているのかもしれません。
この本は、その喪失を解決するものではありません。
ただ、すべてが加速する前に確かに存在していた「人と人の時間」を静かに思い出し、問いかけるための一冊です。
